Cherupayar thoran ( Green Gram Stir Fry)

>> Jul 13, 2010

One of my Favourite Side dish with Kanji(rice porridge), this green gram dish is very easy to make and is highly nutritious. This made a regular appearance in my lunch box during school days, and i bet that was the case with many of you.

Recipe for Kerala Cherupayaru thoran

Ingredients:-
Cherupayar/Green gram/Moong beans - 1 cup
Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
Garlic - 3-4 cloves
Ginger - a small piece (optional)
Shallots/Kunjulli - 6 (or use 1/4 cup chopped onions instead)
Green chilies - 2
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Crushed peppercorns - 1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds
curry leaves
Salt
Method
Soak Cherupayar/Green gram  overnight or at least for 5 hours
In a heavy bottomed vessel ,Cook this with enough water, by adding salt till it is done,
it will take around 20 minutes.(or cook it in pressure cooker if you want, for 2-3 whistles)
In a mortar and pestle or coffee grinder, crushed garlic and Ginger( if using), green chiles and shallots.
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.when they pop up add curry leaves and crushed mixture
Fry it for 3-4 minutes and add cooked cherupayar/green gram and turmeric powder
Add grated coconut ,and saute for 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally.Add more salt if needed
Sprinkle crushed peppercorns and remove from fire
Serve warm..goes well with kanji!!!!
Cheers!!!
Sarah

Awesome blog. Just a suggestion though: the spelling of the blog name could be tweaked. It took me a while to understand what you meant. I went as far to think perhaps it was "vazhiyilla" :D
Perhaps it could read "VaAzhayila"?

you mentioned garlic in the item list but says to crush ginger in the preparation part. i dont think you use ginger in this one at all

Sarah Naveen February 11, 2011 7:40 AM

@ Anon...
hey thanks for letting me know that minor mistake...i appreciate ur time for this.

sorry to say that i have to contradict you in this...you can add ginger and garlic in what ever you want.its purely ur discretion.. I doubt whether there is any hard n fast rule as to not to.

priyajim March 27, 2011 6:52 AM

hi just to tell u that i never heard ginger is is using for this recepie......

Sarah Naveen March 27, 2011 9:22 AM

@ Priya..Thanks for ur insight...
I add ginger and garlic to what ever i make and whatever I like....To give you a bit insight from my side , It helps you to avoid gastric problems which most of the people have when they take lentils and beans .
And honestly I put recipes here that I make, don't add it if you don't like it!!! period!!!
